Your First Sports Massage Appointment: What to Expect at RFLX Sports Massage in Bishops Cleeve
Written by Charlotte - owner of RFLX Sports Massage in Bishops Cleeve. I’m a qualified sports massage therapist with a background in movement and chronic pain, offering supportive, tailored care to help people feel and move better
If you've never had a sports massage before, it's completely normal to have a few questions about what actually happens when you arrive. Where do I park? How do I find the clinic? Do I need to bring anything? Is there a form to fill in? What happens during the treatment itself? And probably the question I get asked most often in one way or another, is it going to hurt?!
I thought I'd put together a little guide to your first appointment at RFLX Sports Massage, particularly because I know that finding somewhere new for the first time can sometimes feel a little more complicated than it actually is. Once you've been once, you'll know exactly where you're going and what to expect, but hopefully this will make that first visit to The Health Hub in Bishops Cleeve feel a little easier.
Finding RFLX Sports Massage in Bishops Cleeve
RFLX Sports Massage is based within The Health Hub at the Cleevelands Centre in Bishops Cleeve, just outside Cheltenham. The postcode is GL52 7YU, and if you're driving to your appointment there is plenty of free parking available in the car park next to the Co-op. You can park anywhere in the car park, but there is one little thing you'll need to remember when you arrive. Just pop your car registration into the parking machine (which is inside the building - you’ll find it at the top of the stairs when you arrive) to validate your three hours of free parking. Don't worry, your appointment itself is only around an hour and 15 minutes, so you've got plenty of time and won't be rushing back to your car!
Once you've parked, walk past the Co-op, gym and coffee shop and you'll see a door for The Health Hub. The door should open automatically, but if it doesn't, just give it a pull and head inside. From there, make your way upstairs to the top floor. There is a lift available if you need it, as well as step-free access to the building, so you don't need to worry if stairs aren't suitable for you. Once you're upstairs, head through the doors on the right and you'll find the waiting area. Take a seat and I'll come and get you when I'm ready for your appointment.
There are also bathrooms within the waiting area, which can be handy if you've travelled from a little further away. And if you're particularly early, there's a café downstairs too. The café isn't affiliated with the clinic, but you're more than welcome to grab a coffee and wait there if you'd rather, and it's also a useful option if you've brought someone with you who doesn't want to sit in the waiting room for the duration of your appointment.
What Happens When You Arrive?
When you come through for your first appointment, there is a short form for you to fill in before we get started. This covers some basic information about your medical history and gives me the opportunity to make sure I have everything I need to know before we begin. It's not a huge amount of paperwork and it's certainly not designed to feel like you're filling in your life story! It's simply an important part of making sure that the treatment I'm providing is appropriate for you.
Once that's done, we'll have a chat about what's brought you in, what you've been experiencing and what you'd like to get out of your treatment. You might have a very specific problem, such as lower back pain, a tight calf that's been bothering you after running or a shoulder that's been niggling away for weeks. Equally, you might just feel generally stiff and uncomfortable without really knowing why, and that's absolutely fine too. You don't need to arrive knowing exactly what's wrong or which muscle is causing the problem. That's where the assessment comes in, and I'll take the time to understand what's going on rather than simply jumping straight into treatment.
I'll look at how you're moving where appropriate and use that information alongside what you've told me to work out how best to approach your treatment. One of the things I really enjoy about this side of my work is looking at the bigger picture. Sometimes the area that hurts isn't necessarily the only area that needs attention, so rather than simply treating wherever you're pointing when you walk through the door, I'll consider how everything is working together.
Will Sports Massage Hurt?
This is probably one of the biggest worries people have before their first appointment, particularly if they've heard stories about sports massage being incredibly painful. There's definitely a misconception that the more uncomfortable a treatment is, the more effective it must be, but thankfully that's not how I work. Sports massage doesn't need to leave you wondering whether you've been treated or attacked!
Pressure is always adapted to you and your individual needs, and I'll explain what I'm doing as we go along. Depending on what's appropriate for you, treatment might include sports massage techniques, deeper tissue work, assisted stretching and movement advice, but everything is tailored around what your body needs on the day. Communication is really important, so if something doesn't feel right or the pressure is too much, just tell me. I'd much rather you say something than lie there silently wondering why on earth you agreed to this in the first place!
A Comfortable, Professional Clinic Environment
I know that the treatment itself is only part of the experience, which is why I've put a lot of thought into creating a space at RFLX Sports Massage that feels professional, welcoming and comfortable from the moment you arrive. The clinic is based within The Health Hub in Bishops Cleeve, and there is step-free access, a lift, bathrooms in the waiting area and plenty of free parking, so hopefully the practical side of getting to your appointment is nice and straightforward.
The treatment room is also fully climate controlled with modern air conditioning, which is particularly welcome during the warmer months. Nobody wants to be lying on a treatment couch feeling like they've accidentally booked themselves into a sauna, especially when the weather is doing its best to turn Gloucestershire into the Mediterranean! I want you to feel comfortable when you're here, whether that's your first appointment or you've been coming to see me for years.
What Do I Need to Bring?
Honestly, not much! You don't need to bring anything special with you and there's no complicated preparation required before your appointment. I'd recommend wearing something you're comfortable moving around in and, depending on the area we're treating, I'll explain what clothing needs to be moved or removed to allow appropriate access to the muscles we're working on. Your comfort and privacy are always important, and I'll make sure you're comfortable with what's happening throughout your appointment.
I also take card payments at the clinic, and the cost of your first appointment is £65. If you're driving, the only other thing I'd suggest remembering is your car registration so you can validate your free parking when you arrive. Other than that, just turn up and I'll take care of the rest.
What If I Can't Find You?
It happens! The Health Hub is within the Cleevelands Centre in Bishops Cleeve and once you know where you're going it's really straightforward, but I appreciate that finding somewhere for the first time can sometimes involve a little bit of driving around thinking, "I know I'm supposed to be here, but where exactly am I supposed to go?"
If you do have any problems finding me, just send me a message via WhatsApp. The mobile signal in the building isn't always the best, so I don't always receive calls reliably, whereas WhatsApp is usually the easiest way to get hold of me. And don't worry about messaging if you're unsure. I'd much rather you dropped me a quick message than spent ten minutes wandering around the Cleevelands Centre wondering if you've somehow ended up in the wrong place! Spoiler alert: we are NOT based in the doctor’s surgery - that is the most common place people wind up in error
I'm Based in Bishops Cleeve, But Clients Travel From Across Gloucestershire
Although RFLX Sports Massage is based in Bishops Cleeve, I see clients from all over the surrounding area. I have people travelling from Cheltenham, Tewkesbury, Winchcombe and Woodmancote, as well as clients who make the journey from a little further afield, including Ross and Hereford.
For some people, being able to access a professional sports massage clinic close to home is really important, particularly when they're dealing with ongoing pain or trying to fit treatment around work and family life. For others, they're happy to travel a little further because they want treatment that's tailored specifically to them and their needs, rather than simply booking a generic massage.
Your First Appointment Doesn't Need to Feel Complicated
The main thing I want people to take away from this is that you don't need to know anything about sports massage before you come in. You don't need to know what's wrong, which muscle you've injured or what treatment you need. You don't even need to be particularly sporty! You just need to tell me what's been going on and what you'd like some help with, and we'll work it out together.
From parking at the Cleevelands Centre and finding The Health Hub, to filling in your initial form, having a chat and getting started with treatment, I'll guide you through the process. My aim is for you to feel comfortable, listened to and confident that you're in the right place, whether you're coming to see me about lower back pain, an ongoing niggle, tight muscles, recovery from training or simply because your body doesn't feel quite as good as you'd like it to.
So if you've been thinking about booking but have been putting it off because you're not quite sure what to expect, hopefully this has answered some of those questions. And if you're still wondering whether sports massage could help with what's bothering you, that's exactly what your first appointment is for. At RFLX Sports Massage in Bishops Cleeve, everything we do is tailored to you: your body, your goals, and what’s going to help you feel and move better long-term.
